About Strathyre in The Trossachs

Strathyre village is on the A84 trunk road about 9 miles north of Callander at the north end of Loch Lubnaig. The village was originally on the west side of the river Balvaig but with the arrival of the railway most of the village was mover to its present location on the opposite bank on the A84. A lop-sided feeling hits you as you drive through Strathyre as all but a handful of the buildings are on the east side of the road apart from a few houses and a shop near the centre. The village lies beside the river with wooded hillsides on both sides.

There are several hotels, guest houses, pubs, some self-catering cottages and a caravan park in and near to Strathyre.

Activities

Strathyre is in a beautiful location and with forests and hillsides on both sides and makes a good base from which to explore the eastern part of the Trossachs.

• Ben Shian (1870 feet) can be climbed using the track which starts near to the village school on the west side of the river with a round trip of about 4 miles (suitable footwear required) . Ben Shian provides some magnificent views over Strathyre, Loch Lubnaig and the Trossachs mountains.
• A network of forest trails provides access to forest walks .
• The Ben Shian track can be used to walk over to Glen Buckie returning via Balquhidder and a quiet (but not traffic free) B road on the west side of the river Balvaig.
• Three miles south of Strathyre at Ardchullerie More a track up Glen Ample provides a short exploration into the glen with the option of taking in Ben Each on the east side of Glen Ample. Stuc a Chroin may also be reached via Bean Each providing you are able to use map & Compass and have the energy, suitable clothing and the time to complete that more serious expedition.
• The Cycleway C7 passes through Strathyre on its way to Glen Dochart. If cycling all the way to Killin, bear in mind that the route leaves the level rail track-bed at Glen Ogle head and descends steeply to Killin - it's a long push back up the hill to Glen Ogle!
