About The Trossachs, Scotland

Probably the first and most important thing about The Trossachs in Scotland is the fact that there is a wonderful variety of things to do, places to visit, scenery, mountains and lochs which is often preferred by those interested in scenery, walking, cycling, hill walking and other outdoor interests. For the photographer an almost limitless source of inspiration can be had from the placid reflections and hillsides around the quiet lochs and from the unique character of the many villages, hamlets, farmscapes, drystone walls and ruins. The area is steeped in history and tradition and was the haunt of Rob Roy MacGregor. In the heart of The Trossachs, Loch Katrine is home to the famous 100 year old steam driven pleasure Steamer Sir Walter Scott.

The Location of The Trossachs in Scotland

The Trossachs - from the Gaelic word meaning 'a bristly place' - was originally the name of a small area lying between Loch Achray and Loch Katrine, Ben A'an and Ben Venue, where the present Trossachs pier is on Loch Katrine. When tourism in this part of Scotland grew rapidly with the arrival of the railway line, the name 'Trossachs' was taken to mean the tract of mountains and Lochs between Callander and the east shore of loch Lomond.

When the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park was formed, the park was divided into four regions: Lomond, Trossachs, Breadalbane and Argyll. The Trossachs region of the National Park comprises the most popular central area including Aberfoyle, Loch Katrine pier, Brig o' Turk, Callander & Strathyre. Also included are the Queen Elizabeth Forest Park, seven major lochs and even more small lochs. Most accommodation in and near Callander.
